ABSTRACT: Early blight is one of the most important fungal diseases of potato. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro reaction of potato genotypes to the severity of early blight and compare the species Alternaria solani and Alternaria grandis , etiologic agents of disease, through the evaluation of physiological characteristics. ABSTRACT Brycon amazonicus is a native Amazonian fish that is important for aquaculture in South America. Larval mortality is high in this species in intensive breeding systems due to aggressiveness among larvae. The present study investigated experimentally the effects of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior and survival of B. amazonicus during the early stages of larval development. Fighting by sleep-deprived rats as a possible manifestation of panic: effects of sodium lactate BJMBR

Increased fighting is an effect of desynchronized sleep deprivation (DSD) in rats, and recently this behavior has been suggested to be spontaneous panic and equivalent to panic disorder. In the present study we tested this hypothesis by evaluating the effect of sodium lactate on this aggressiveness, because this substance is recognized to induce spontaneous panic attacks in patients. A total of 186 male albino Wistar rats, 250-350 g, 90-120 days of age, were submitted to DSD (multiple platform method) for 0, 4, or 5 days. Multiple queens in founding colonies of the neotropical ant Pachycondyla striata smith (Formicidae: Ponerinae) Neotropical Entomology

In social insects, the typical mode of colony foundation occurs when a single queen is inseminated by a male and establishes a new colony, although we can find interspecific and intraspecific variations in queen number and queen-mating frequencies in a single colony. This study aimed to verify the queen number in Pachycondyla striata (Smith) colonies and to evaluate the level of aggressiveness among workers. We collected 14 colonies of P. striata. Nest deprivation and mating success in Nile tilapia (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Zoologia

We tested the effect of nest deprivation on the mating success and sexual selection of dominant Nile tilapia males in two treatments, consisting of two males and three females kept on aquarium with or without nesting substrate (INS: with substrate inside, N = 9; NOS: non-substrate inside, N = 11). Other male traits potentially affecting mating success, such as aggressiveness level, courtship investment, and condition factor were also analyzed. The dominant male's behavior was video-recorded in four 20-min sessions: 1, 4, 7, and 10 days after grouping. Pathogenic, morphological and genetic diversity in Plasmopara halstedii, the causal agent of sunflower downy mildew - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i1.15722 Agronomy

Pathogenic, morphological and genetic variation was studied in 35 Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew) isolates of different races. Virulence spectrum was analyzed in sunflower hybrids carrying effective Plgenes. Aggressiveness was analyzed in one sunflower inbred line showing a high level of quantitative resistance. There were differences in virulence spectrum for pathogen isolates. Index of aggressiveness was calculated for each isolate and two groups were revealed as more aggressive isolates of 100 and 3xx races, and less aggressive isolates of 7xx races. Significant morphological differences were found in zoosporangia and sporangiophores morphology. Genetic relationships were detected between the pathogen isolates using 12 EST-derived markers....

Reaction of dwarf cashew clones to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolates in controlled environment Scientia Agricola

The cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) crop is an important source of income for the population of the Brazilian Northeast, and anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides leads to significant production loss. However, there is little information on either the host resistance or the variation in the aggressiveness of the pathogen under controlled environment. The reaction of commercial (CCP-06, CCP-09, CCP-76 and CCP-1001) and one non-commercial (CAP-14) dwarf cashew clones was assessed against 36 isolates of this fungus controlled environmental conditions. Animals show behavioral and physiological changes that emerge in response to environmental perturbations (i.e., emergency life-history stages). In this study, we investigate the effects of light intensity on aggressive encounters and social stability in groups of adult male Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). The study compared the behavior observed under low (280.75 ± 50.60 lx) and high (1394.14 ± 520.32 lx) light intensities, with 12 replicates for each treatment. Adult fish were isolated in 36-L aquaria for 96 hours, and three males were grouped for 11 days in 140-L aquaria.
